Army Expands Contract With Axion

Adding a Second Tank Bridge to be constructed from Axion's Unique, Patented Blend of Recycled Composite Materials

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Axion International Holdings, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: AXIH - News), a technology company that converts recycled plastics into high value-added structural products used in commercial applications, today announced that the US Army has ordered another new bridge to be constructed using the Company's patented blend of recycled composite materials. This bridge, an addition to the Army's original bridge order placed in July 2008, will be approximately fifty-one feet long, 1/3 longer than the first one and will be capable of handling loads in excess of 140,000 lbs to allow tanks to traverse it.

James Kerstein, CEO of Axion, stated, "We're very pleased to have received another bridge order from the United States Army. This order is further tangible evidence that our patented technology is raising the bar on what can be achieved using recycled materials to open markets through previously unreachable performance standards. The development of these bridges synchronizes perfectly with our focus on rebuilding and greening the US infrastructure.

As we continue to focus on building our sales pipeline, we intend to fully leverage this success in the construction of bridges in other verticals including the golf industry as well as the general vehicular transportation industry. Being chosen by a respected organization like the Army positions us extremely well for future growth opportunities."

In awarding the contract, the Army stated, "Because of the durability (corrosion resistance) these materials offer, there is an interest within the Army for using thermoplastic composites for vehicular bridge applications at a minimum 70 ton load capacity. The need for a minimum 70 ton load capacity will require an innovative design and materials application -- the existing wood bridge to be replaced currently has a load rating of 6 tons."

In addition to the two latest orders, a bridge located in Fort Leonard Wood was constructed in 1998 using our first generation technology. A recent study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' concluded that the Fort Leonard Wood Bridge has had virtually no maintenance and still looked like new after nine years.

About Axion International

Axion International (www.axionintl.com) is positioned as an important structural product provider of alternative infrastructure and building products. Axion operates from a "green" base, developing structural products made from recycled consumer and industrial plastics that would otherwise be discarded into landfills. Axion International's patented technologies, developed in collaboration with scientists at Rutgers University, allow for products that are extremely strong, durable, flexible in use, and low maintenance. Traditional construction suppliers of wood, steel, and concrete cannot compete with the flexible design features of structural plastic. Manufactured from consumer and industrial waste plastics, Axion's upcycled products are an economic alternative to traditional building materials.
